Dean Harvey and his team of business development specialists in the Von Allmen Center for Entrepreneurship work with faculty, clinicians, staff and students on campus who want to start a business based on their research and ideas. They provide ongoing support and services such as intellectual property and technology assessment, assistance with business plans and obtaining funding, marketing strategies, and growth planning (see below).
Pat Powell, Lexington Innovation & Commercialization Center director, assists seed and early stage high tech and high growth business projects from both the Lexington community and the UK campus and assists entrepreneurs who are working through technology issues, high growth business planning, and fund raising.
Planning
- Assess intellectual property/technology commercialization potential
- Conduct market research to validate feasibility, market size and perceptions
- Develop go-to-market strategies
- Recommend competitive business strategy
- Compile financial analysis, projections and valuation tools
Connections
- Connect with University of Kentucky research and resources
- Provide access to on-campus incubator space
- Refer to vetted service providers
- Provide ongoing management assistance
- Facilitate connections to potential strategic partners and management team members
Funding
- Assist in acquiring seed capital through federal SBIR/STTR programs and Kentucky Match Program
- Assist with applications to the various Kentucky venture funds
- Conduct finance and valuation workshops
- Guide investor presentation development
- Assist in early-stage funding with angel investors and venture capitalists
