The University of Kentucky strives to provide an atmosphere where the spirit of inquiry flourishes and where this scholarly inquiry, in the form of research and creative activity, ultimately leads to tangible benefits for society as a whole. In turn, new and innovative research enables UK to recruit, reward, and retain outstanding faculty, generate income to support further research, and promote economic growth.

The development, management, and transfer of intellectual property to benefit the public require a strong partnership between the university and youthe faculty, staff and students who make the discoveries. The 1980 Bayh-Dole Act gives universities the right to retain ownership of IP resulting from federally funded support, and this ownership right is broadened in the Tax Reform Act of 1986. This right of ownership allows UK to protect your rights to use the IP and continue to build on your research. UK safeguards not only your rights as the originator, but also safeguards the IP, as the university works in the spirit of Bayh-Dole to bring the IP into public use.
This Web site will guide you through the internal policies of intellectual property development and current technology-transfer practices at the University of Kentucky.
